Masters moment: Friends Schwartzel, Oosthuizen
Wednesday, April 10, 2013
AUGUSTA, Ga. It was pitch-black after the jacket ceremony at last year's Masters. Charl Schwartzel had slipped the coat on Bubba Watson's shoulders after Watson's incredible playoff shot.
It was one that will go down in history, but it denied Schwartzel the chance to honor his childhood friend. Instead, Schwartzel had to console Louis Oosthuizen after Oosthuizen's near-miss at the Masters.
A security guard escorted Schwartzel back to the clubhouse, where staff was already vacuuming and stacking chairs now that the club's championship was complete. Oosthuizen was holding one of his young children when Schwartzel found his friend in the near-empty building.
It would've been such a good story: two farmers' sons from South Africa standing together on Augusta National's practice green to celebrate their status as Masters champions. Schwartzel and Oosthuizen shared a tender moment after the playoff. Just not the one they were hoping for.
