Pernice holds off Sluman's charge at 3M
Sunday, August 4, 2013
Jeff Sluman was on 59 watch for a while – but his 62 wasn't enough to overtake Tom Pernice Jr., who shot 68 Sunday to win the 3M Championship in Blaine, Minn.
Sluman parred his last four holes, while Pernice finished birdie-birdie for a one-shot win at 17 under.
Corey Pavin birdied the 18th for a 66 to finish T-2 alongside Sluman. Bart Bryant, Jay Haas and Rod Spittle finished T-4 at 14 under. Colin Montgomerie, Kenny Perry, Craig Stadler and Kirk Triplett finished another shot back to round out the top 10.
Pernice, who finished T-2 at the Allianz Championship and Greater Gwinnett Championship, picked up his first win since the 2009 SAS Championship and took home $262,500.
Sluman, 55, was an outside threat to shoot his age after opening with seven straight birdies. The 1988 PGA Championship winner picked up just three more the rest of the way, though, and just one during his last seven holes.
