Saunders leads by 3 at Web.com Tour Q-School

There is a new leader in the clubhouse after the third round of Web.com Tour Q-School. Steve Saunders shot a 5-under 67 on the Stadium Course at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif., on Saturday to take a three shot lead at Final Stage.

Saunders finished his third round with consecutive birdies on Nos. 15-18 for a 4-under 32 on the back nine.

In second place, is Jimmy Gunn of Scotland, who also played on the Stadium course during the third round. Gunn shot an 8-under 64 who made one of the biggest jumps of the day from T-23 to T-2. Scott Pinckney is the other player tied for second after a 67.

Other news and notes:

• Former California teammates Max Homa and Michael Kim are tied for fourth after they shot 67 and 66, respectively. Kim is one of three amateurs playing in the field this week. He has not made up his mind on whether or not he’ll turn pro. It depended on where he finished this week in the field.

• Former North Carolina State player Albin Choi, who left school early to turn professional, is T-16 after a third round 5-under 67. He played on PGA Canada last year.

• Manuel Villegas is 7-under 209 after three rounds. Villegas, the younger brother of Camillo, is trying to secure Web.com Tour status for the first time since 2010.

• Justin Thomas struggled with a 6-over 78 on Saturday. Thomas, who left Alabama after his sophomore year, quadruple bogeyed the par-4 18th coming in. He is currently T-122 with three rounds remaining.
