Westmoreland takes lead at Patriot All-America
Monday, December 30, 2013
Kyle Westmoreland is becoming quite the crowd favorite at the Patriot All-America Invitational.
Westmoreland, who plays college golf at Air Force, fired a 1-under 69 to grab the second-round lead at The Wigwam, which is located in Litchfield Park, Ariz., near Luke Air Force Base.
“I was telling one of the rules officials out here that I can’t go three holes without someone coming up and saying, ‘Hey, I’m an Air Force guy,’ " Westmoreland said. "It’s great to have people like that. It does feel like a home game for me and it’s a great community. Them supporting me is huge and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it.”
Westmoreland began the day one shot off the lead before carding three birdies against two bogeys on the Gold Course to move to 4 under. He leads Oregon's Thomas Lim by a shot. First-round leader Tim Crouch of Florida Southern is two shots back along with Texas' Toni Hakula, Florida State's Hank Lebioda and Arkansas' Taylor Moore.
SMU's Bryson Dechambeau carded a second-round 66, the best round of the day, while Emory's Alex Wunderlich and Clemson's Cody Proveaux each aced the 170-yard, par-3 16th hole on Monday.
