Player diary: Brad Dalke (Part 2)
I just played in the Jones Cup Invitational at Ocean Forest Golf Club in Sea Island, Ga. I shot 79-75-77 and finished T-44 against the best amateur and collegiate players in the world.
I'm a little disappointed that I didn't play as well as I wanted, but I am learning how difficult it is to stay patient on tough courses like Ocean Forest. I am going to do my best to apply a better mental game next weekend at AJGA HP Boys Invitational in The Woodlands, Texas.
I felt like I prepared really well with my caddy Jason Williams (Sea Island) for the tournament. He was very knowledgeable and he was a very good caddy.
I played my practice round with Abe Ancer, Charlie Saxon and Chase Koepka. It was fun playing with my OU boys and with Chase because we played together in the 2011 AJGA PING Invitational.
The first two days I was paired with Alex Carpenter, who finished second, and Adam Wood, who was one of the other juniors in the tournament. Alex got up and down from everywhere both days. Walker Cup captain Jim Holtgrieve watched our group some because he is looking at Alex to possibly be on the team. I would love to play for the U.S. one day in the Walker Cup. It's one of my big goals for amateur golf.
Ocean Forest was one of the toughest courses I have ever played. It's the first course I've played that has a 620-yard par 5 that is into the ocean wind with a 20-yard wide fairway. I give a lot of props to Jones Cup champion Sean Dale for shooting a 69 in the last round. That was a heck of a score in that wind!
A couple of cool things about the course were the jumping fish in the ponds and the big gators. The fish were getting some pretty big air on a few of the jumps!
I really want to thank Tom and Germaine Perambo, some of our good friends we met at U.S. Kids days, for letting us stay at their "five-star" home and making us feel very welcome. Germaine, the food was awesome!
I also want to thank Jim Stahl, who was instrumental in starting the Jones Cup Invitational; my caddy Jason Williams for putting up with me for the tournament – that can be hard to do; club professional Kory Reitz and the Ocean Forest staff for providing us a course in perfect condition to play on for three days; and Bill Jones and the Jones Cup Committee for putting on such a great tournament. I hope I get to come back for many more years.
I'm preparing for the AJGA HP Boys Invitational right now. The tournament is Feb. 16-18. I am practicing hard
and working on my chipping and lag putting for those huge undulating greens at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas. I also just got my new Nike Covert clubs and I will be breaking them out for the first time at the tournament.
Thanks for reading and until next time . . . Boomer Sooner!
