Vandy's Stewart wins shortened Players Amateur
Sunday, July 14, 2013
Vanderbilt junior Hunter Stewart didn't even need to complete his final round to win the 14th annual Players Amateur on Sunday, as Mother Nature washed out play and limited the tournament to 54 holes at Berkeley Hall Club in Bluffton, S.C.
Stewart finished at 14-under 202 to edge University of California senior Michael Weaver by one shot. South Florida's Chase Koepka was third at 8-under 208, one ahead of Alabama teammates Bobby Wyatt and Tom Lovelady. The leaders had played just five holes, with Stewart extending his lead over Weaver to two shots, when heavy rains prevented further play, reverting official scores to the 54-hole results.
With the victory, Stewart earns a spot in the PGA Tour's RBC Heritage in 2014.
Stewart had a solid sophomore campaign with the Commodores, winning the Samford Invitational and finishing second at the Mason Rudolph Championship.
