Spencer selected to replace Watney at Fresno State
Tuesday, July 16, 2013
Fresno State has named Chad Spencer the next men’s golf coach. Spencer, a former Bulldog, replaces Mike Watney, who retired after 35 years at the Bulldog helm.
“Fresno State holds a special place in my heart. I look forward to continuing the mission and excellence that Coach Watney established during his Hall of Fame career,” Spencer said.
Spencer graduated from Fresno State in 2005 as a four-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs. He was an instructor and club fitter at River Park Golf Center in Fresno, Calif., and competed on the Canadian Tour following his graduation.
Spencer spent the past three years as the head women’s golf coach at Nevada, where he led the Wolf Pack to a fourth-place finish at the 2013 Mountain West Championship.
“Chad is a great choice as Fresno State’s next head men’s golf coach,” Watney said. “He is one of my all-time favorite players. Besides being a great player, he has one of the most engaging personalities I have ever come across. The Valley will love him, as well as the Fresno State community. I retire confident that the current players and the future recruits are in good hands.”
Fresno State ended the 2012-13 season ranked No. 84 by Golfweek.
