Olsen wins Southern Amateur in three-way playoff

Zachary Olsen sank a pair of birdie putts, first at the 72nd hole then on the first hole of sudden death, to claim the Southern Amateur on Saturday at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas.
Olsen, who will be a freshman at Oklahoma State in the fall, finished regulation at 12-under 276, tied with Sam Love of Trussville, Ala., and Joey Garber of Petoskey, Mich. Olsen sank an 18 footer at the 18th to shoot a final-round 71 and earn a spot in the playoff. His birdie putt on the first playoff hole was 20 feet.
Olsen held the first-round lead with a 64, then reclaimed the lead after a third-round 68. He also won the Sage Valley Junior Invitational in 2012.
Georgia Tech’s Oliver Schniederjans was solo fourth at 11-under 277. Alabama’s Justin Thomas, Mississippi State’s Chad Ramey and UCLA’s Jonathan Garrick tied for fifth at 10-under 276. Thomas and Ramey shot 64 in the final round.
