The R&A fell short of its attendance goals at the Open Championship at Muirfield, with 142,036 fans taking in the action over the week.

Its initial goal was 160,000, with hopes of 170,000.

This year's attendance at Muirfield is also nearly 18,000 fans worse than the last time it was held in Gullane, Scotland -- in 2002.

Sunday's attendance was more than 2,000 fans worse than 2002, with only 29,247 attending this year.

Ticket prices are likely to blame, as a daily ticket this week was about $7.60 more than last year and $15.25 more than 2011.
