Toy Box: Mickelson’s unconventional Open triumph
Tuesday, July 23, 2013
In his victory speech, a moment usually reserved for family and coaches, Open Championship winner Phil Mickelson gave kudos to Callaway, too, thanking the company’s staff for the gear that brought him one step closer to a career Grand Slam.
Mickelson’s equipment lineup: Callaway X Hot 3Deep (13 degree, with a Mitsubishi Fubuki K 70x shaft), Ping Anser hybrid (17 degree, with a Mitsubishi Kuro Kage Hybrid shaft), Callaway X Forged irons (4-6, with KBS Tour shafts; 7-PW, with KBS Tour V2 shafts), Callaway X Series Jaws (52, 56 degree) and Mack Daddy 2 (60, 64 degree) wedges – all with KBS Tour V2 shafts – and an Odyssey Versa No. 9 putter. He used a prototype Callaway Hex Chrome+ golf ball.
Mickelson appears to be the first golfer in the modern era to win a major championship without a driver in his bag. He may claim another distinction as well: winning a major with five wedges. His wedge lofts were 47, 52, 56, 60 and 64 degrees. In his previous major victories, Mickelson carried four wedges.
Regarding Mickelson’s Odyssey Versa No. 9: It is 34 inches in length, with a White Hot Pro insert. The black shaft is the same as the shafts used in Odyssey ProType Black putters. The putter has extra offset bent into the hosel because Mickelson likes this look at address. It also has an alignment line milled into the back flange, although this line is raw stainless steel and is not paint-filled.
