Shooting 5-under-par 67 in the final round, Matt Cheng of Taiwan won the boys division while Sammi Lee's 1-over 73 put the wraps on winning the girls division at the Davis Love III Junior Open in St. Simons Island, Ga., on Thursday.
Cheng began the third and final round a stroke back, but eight birdies carried him to the win. It was a departure from the double bogey that started his tournament.
"I worked my way back and now I’m here. I just didn’t think much and stayed calm, and it worked," Cheng said.
Zachary Healy of Peachtree Corners, Ga., finished two shots back in second, with Alex Green of Fairhope, Ala., another two shots back.
Lee, of Winter Park, Fla., had pulled away to win by six after starting the final round tied for the lead. The Georgia commit won in her final junior tournament – and credited junior golf with building her budding collegiate career.
"I’ve made so many great memories and friends playing and traveling out here. It’s helped my golf game tremendously, just a fantastic experience all around," Lee said.
Sabrina Long of Alpharetta, Ga., finished second, with Phyllis Tang of Bluffton, S.C., another shot back.
