The last time Phil Mickelson teed it up in the FedEx St. Jude Classic was in 2009, when he finished 55th at TPC Southwind. The next week he went on to finish runner-up at the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black.

With one week left before this year's U.S. Open at Merion, Mickelson will make just his third appearance at the Memphis, Tenn., tournament. it will be the final tune-up for players before the season's second major next week in Ardmore, Pa.

No player has won the U.S. Open after winning the previous week.

• Tape delayed: Visual memories surface for Mr. 59: Not a day goes by that Al Geiberger doesn’t relive June 10, 1977, when during the second round of the Danny Thomas Memphis Classic he became the first player to break 60 in a Tour-sanctioned event. There was just one thing: He’d never seen it on video – that is, until recently.

We'll follow the action at TPC Southwind all day long – and scroll down for our pretournament coverage as well.

Update No. 19: 3:22 p.m. EDT

Phil Mickelson is staying positive after his 1-over 71 today. He stressed that he's hitting the ball very well, and faulted his thinking around the greens.

"My short game wasn't sharp today, but I made a mistake in some of my shot selection trying to hit some of these shots," Mickelson told Golf Channel. "There are very tight lies, very grainy and very sandy, and so you just have to putt it and that's what I should do and will do.

Mickelson alluded to the fact that he hasn't played in recent weeks and said that the tee-to-green game has him looking forward to the second round. "I know that ball-striking wise, it's as about as good as I've been striking it, and I feel like there's a good, good round in me."

Tianlang Guan was 1 under through five holes, but he's 5 over since and heads into his 15th hole of the day, the par-4 sixth, at 4 over. Fellow amateur Matt NeSmith, who just completed his freshman season at South Carolina, is 2 over through 13 holes.

• • •

Update No. 14: 1:36 p.m. EDT

• • •

Update No. 9: 11:44 a.m. EDT

Phil Mickelson got off to a good start, opening with birdie at No. 10 and hitting his first five greens in regulation. But after being 1 under through five holes, Mickelson has dropped to 3 over through eight holes. The reason? He just bogeyed the par-4 17th after making double bogey at the par-5 16th. He's 4 over in his last three holes.

• • •

Update No. 4: 10:06 a.m. EDT

Phil Mickelson makes par at the par-3 14th to remain at 1 under through five holes. Mickelson hasn't missed a green in regulation yet and he trails the leaders by a shot.

• • •

Update No. 2: 9:37 a.m. EDT

Scott Stallings is among the three players tied for the lead. He's a 2 under through four holes. It's been a great week already for Stallings, though, as he found out he will play in next week's U.S. Open after defending U.S. Senior Open champ Roger Chapman withdrew with a shoulder injury.

• • •

Update No. 1: 9:26 a.m. EDT
