Straight vibin'

According to the Urban Dictionary, the word “vibin' ” can mean “hanging, doing nothing, chilling.” It can also refer to “just connecting with your surroundings, whether it’s music, reading or watching TV.”

North Florida sophomore M.J. Maguire is doing the latter in terms of his golf right now.

Maguire, known on Twitter as @mjstr8vibin, one of the better Twitter handles in college golf, recorded his first college victory last month at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. He’s now leading after the first round of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional after carding a 7-under 65.

“I've probably played and practiced more recently, and I feel like all that work is paying off,” Maguire said in a school news release.

Entering the tournament, Maguire was second on the team in scoring average (71.62). He also has six top-10 finishes on the year, including three in his last three starts.

Maguire was bogey-free Thursday, making five birdies and an eagle en route to the best round of his college career. He leads Florida State’s Chase Seiffert and Georgia Tech’s Anders Albertson by a shot.

Maguire’s 65 also helped the Ospreys, the No. 4 seed, jump out to an early lead as a team. North Florida also got a 68 from Kevin Phelan and a 69 from Sean Dale.

Huskies lurking

North Florida might have gotten off to a strong start, but top-seeded Washington is just four shots back and has its top two golfers playing well.

Cheng-Tsung Pan carded a 5-under 67, while Chris Williams added a 68. They are Golfweek’s highest-ranked pair of teammates in this regional at Nos. 15 and 11, respectively.

Williams has finished T-4 or better in six of 10 starts this season, while Pan started strong with a win and three finishes of T-3 or better, although he has just three top 10s in seven spring starts.

If Washington can get a low score or two from Trevor Simsby (70) or Charlie Hughes (71) during the next two rounds, the Huskies could track down the Ospreys.

Short shots

The biggest first-round surprises include No. 11 seed South Florida (T-4) and individual Edward Figueroa of Florida Gulf Coast (4-under 68). . . . On the other hand, North Carolina State’s Albin Choi has to be disappointed after an opening-round 74, which leaves him T-49. Choi has won five times this season and is ranked No. 12 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings. . . . Florida State’s Daniel Berger made five birdies, but also a bogey and double bogey to open with 70. Berger is Golfweek’s highest-ranked player in the field at No. 7. The host Seminoles are third in the team standings.
