Texeira, Owen take 1st-round leads at Polo

Jonah Texeira of Sun Valley, Calif., carded a 5-under 67 to grab the first-round lead at the Polo Golf Junior Classic.
Texeira made six birdies, including five on the front nine, at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The USC signee leads the boys division by a shot over Cameron Young of Scarborough, N.Y.
Dallas native Scottie Scheffler, a Texas signee and the 2013 AJGA Rolex player of the year, is tied for third at 2 under along with Hidetoshi Yoshihara of Japan and Grant Hirschman of Collierville, Tenn. LSU commit Sam Burns and Texas signee Doug Ghim are part of a seven-way tie for sixth.
On the girls side, Michaela Owen of Suwanee, Ga., shot 3-under 69 to take a one-shot lead over Kristen Gillman of Austin, Texas. The two were the only girls under par Monday.
Alabama signee Lakareber Abe of Angleton, Texas, is tied for third at 1 over along with Sierra Brooks of Sorrento, Fla., and Ruixin Liu of China.
The final round of stroke-play qualifying will be Tuesday with match play beginning on Wednesday. The top 32 will advance to match play. The match-play final is scheduled for Friday.
