Sanderson Farms moves date, renews sponsorship
The Sanderson Farms Championship will move to late October in 2014 and retain its title sponsor for the next three years, the company and the PGA Tour announced Tuesday.
While the purse will increase by $3 million for the 2014 event as the Sanderson Farms Championship moves to the front of the 2014-15 Tour schedule, the tournament at Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Miss., will not take place during the 2013-14 season as a result of the transition.
Tour veteran Woody Austin won the 2013 Sanderson Farms Championship in a three-way playoff in July for his first win since 2007. It was the first year Sanderson Farms served as title sponsor.
“We had a very positive experience this year and saw the potential to magnify the impact the tournament has,” Sanderson Farms CEO Joe Sanderson said in a statement. “Since it was first held in 1968, this tournament has been very important to our state and the metro Jackson area in terms of the exposure, charitable giving and economic impact it has provided."
The tournament will take place the same week as the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in China, with a prize purse of $4 million. PGA TOUR Chief of Operations Andy Pazder said in a statement that the tournament's move to October could help the field grow stronger, as well as improve course conditions and weather reliability.
