A rookie on the PGA Tour, Jordan Spieth was a captain's pick for this year's Presidents Cup bid. But just two years ago, Spieth was representing the U.S. in Walker Cup competition at Royal Aberdeen.

“To this day it's the biggest honor I've ever had, to get the call,” Spieth said. “I remember where I was getting the call. I just had gotten to school and Captain Holtgrieve called and asked if I wanted to join the team.”

Spieth enjoyed the trip to Scotland, not only playing Royal Aberdeen but experiencing many of the best links courses before the Walker Cup. Clearly, it served him well when he qualified for the Open Championship by winning the John Deere Classic the week before.

“We left early, and just getting to hang out with the top 10 amateurs in the world from the United States and then the top 10 from GB&I, it was just such a blast off the course,” Spieth said of the experience. “And then to be able to play over there, I liked playing over there, to have everybody rooting against us almost. It just kind of gave us all a little bit more fire. It was just an unbelievable experience.”

Spieth has gotten calls from a current Walker Cupper, Justin Thomas.

“He's so excited,” Spieth said of Thomas. “He couldn't be more excited, and I think most of the guys on this team have played together more than I think maybe our team had as far as just in the same group. I think it's a lot of the college guys that have been paired together, which may help. They just know each other a little better.”
