Cal women open season with win in Colorado
The Cal women opened the season with a victory at the Colonel Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic on Tuesday after a final-round 2-under 286 at Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo. The Golden Bears, led by co-runner-up Nicola Roessler, finished nine shots ahead of second-place Colorado.
“I feel really good for this team,” California head coach Nancy McDaniel said. “They showed a lot of resilience on the course. They came in averaging at least four birdies per player this last round. We had two under-par rounds, including Nicola’s in the 60s. She showed what she can do and has more of that inside, and so do the rest of them.”
Roessler shot 3-under 69 for a 213 total to lead the Golden Bears. Cal's Carly Childs (70) placed a career-high fourth at 215, and Hannah Suh (74–220) tied for 12th. Cal led by four shots entering the final round and spent Tuesday pulling away from the 17-team field with a tournament-low 2-under 286.
UNLV’s Dana Finkelstein won the individual medal with a 4-under 212. Her Rebels placed fourth on the team leaderboard, two shots behind third-place Illinois. New Mexico, paced by co-runner-up Sammi Stevens (68–213), rounded out the top 5.
