LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The elk hunt will have to wait until next year. Steve Stricker will be playing in the Tour Championship next week instead.

Stricker, 46, confirmed before the BMW Pro-Am on Wednesday morning that he will play next week in Atlanta.

For most of the 2013 season, the Wisconsin native was adamant that he would not play the fourth and final event of the FedEx Cup playoffs. During the past month, Stricker slowly has changed his mind as he progressed from 20th at the start of the playoffs to eighth before this week's BMW Championship, the third leg of the playoffs.

A conversation with his wife, Nicki, on the plane ride back from the Deutsche Bank Championship 10 days ago – where Stricker finished second – solidified his decision.

“Being our marquee event and everybody shooting to get there, getting into the top 10, a lot of things,” Stricker said. “I’m excited to play; don’t get me wrong. I've got a chance to win this thing.”

Late last year, Stricker decided to pare back his schedule, and he has played only 11 events entering the BMW Championship this week.

And though he thought he would play at a high level with a reduced schedule, Stricker did not expect to be in this position, earning a spot on the Presidents Cup team and having a chance to win the FedEx Cup.

“It’s a little different than my plans at the start of the year," said Stricker, acknowledging his position in the playoff standings. "I still played a lot less. But I didn’t expect to be in the position I’m in playing less, so it’s a good problem to have and I’m excited to go play, and I guess the elk hunt will have to wait until next year.”
