Molle's par hands New Mexico the Mountain West title
Saturday, April 26, 2014
New Mexico used a final-round, 24-over 312 to squeak out a 1-shot victory over San Jose State in the Mountain West Women's Championship on Saturday at the Dinah Shore Course at Mission Hills CC in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
The Lobos held a two-shot advantage over Fresno State heading into the round and were four clear of the Spartans.
But a pair of over-80 rounds from its starting five left New Mexico susceptible to a comeback, but a 3-over 75 from Sammi Stevens and 4-over 76 by Manon DeRoey were just enough for the conference title.
But the title came down to Manon Molle, who needed a par or better on the final hole to secure the title for the Lobos. A bogey or worse would have locked New Mexico in a tie with San Jose State.
The gutsy par secured New Mexico's first conference title since 2010.
Fresno State's Gudrun Bjorginsdottir posted rounds of 71-71-76 to win the individual title by a single shot over San Diego State's Emma Henrikson and UNLV's Dana Finkelstein.
