Monday, August 11, 2014
The PGA Tour will host a tournament stateside while the game's best are playing the British Open in 2015.
The Barbasol Championship will be held at Grand National (Lake Course) near Opelika, Ala., on July 16-19. Barbasol is signed on as a corporate sponsor through 2018.
The event will be a part of the FedEx Cup competition, with 300 points going to the champion.
It will be the first PGA Tour event to be played opposite the Open since The Sanderson Farms Championship announced its 2014 move to October.
“We are excited to announce the creation of the Barbasol Championship and to present an outstanding new playing opportunity for our members beginning next season,” PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said in a release.
The last PGA Tour event that was held in the Yellowhammer State was the 1990 PGA Championship, where Wayne Grady won at Shoal Creek Country Club.
Two LPGA events – the Airbus LPGA Classic and the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic – and the Champions Tour's Regions Tradition also are played in Alabama.
