Several of the country’s top girls’ players are showcasing their talents at the Annika Invitational, a 54-hole stroke play tournament to be played this weekend at the Reunion (Fla.) Resort.
Among the 72 girls entered in the tournament are some of the country’s best players, including Nicole Morales, who recently signed to play at Alabama.
Morales, the No. 1 player in the Golfweek/Sagarin Junior Rankings and a top contender this weekend, owns the 2013 Thunderbird International Junior Title. Morales placed eleventh at last year’s Annika Invitational, and could be looking to make a comeback this weekend after falling in the first round to the eventual Polo Golf Junior Classic champion Linnea Strom in November.
Paired in the first round with Morales is fifth-ranked Megan Khang, who secured her first AJGA title at the Ping Invitational in October.
Also in the field is Bethany Wu, who won the event in 2013. Ranked third in the Golfweek Junior rankings, the UCLA verbal commit could be seeking to avenge a disappointing quarterfinal defeat to Strom at the Polo Golf Junior.
First-round pairings for the tournament have Wu grouped with No. 4 Lilia Vu, who had an impressive 2013. She picked up an AJGA title at Robinson Ranch and had top-five finishes at three other AJGA tournaments: the Junior Challenge, the ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior and the Winn Gripps Heather Farr Classic. Vu also snatched a sixth-place finish at the Rolex Tournament of Champions.
Wu and Vu have been paired with No. 2 Andrea Lee, who came second at the Junior Players Championship and at the Rolex Tournament of Champions behind 2013 Player of the Year Alison Lee.
New to the ANNIKA Invitational field in Lakareber Abe, an Alabama commit who could be looking to start the year off right after falling in the championship match at the Polo Golf Junior Classic.
