Brooke Mackenzie Henderson captured low-amateur honors at the 69th U.S. Women’s Open at Pinehurst No. 2 on June 22.

Henderson, 16, from Smith Falls, Ontario, shot a 1-under 69 to finish at 5-over 285. Her 69 was one of 16 rounds under par Sunday.

“Ball striking was really big for me today,” Henderson added. “I made two mistakes off the tee which cost me a double and a bogey, but other than that, I was hitting it really well and had a couple tap-in birdies, which is really nice.”

At one point, Henderson was 3 under for her round, but as she mentioned, a double bogey at the 458-yard par-4 16th derailed her.

“Coming in, I was just trying to make the cut and then climb up the leaderboard, and I was able to do that,” Henderson said. “So I’m very happy.”

Minjee Lee, No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, was all but set to take low-amateur honors after the third round. She was 2 over and only four shots off the pace of 54-hole co-leaders Michelle Wie and Amy Yang, but a final-round 6-over 76 lead to a T-22 finish.

With her top-10 finish, Henderson earns a spot in next year’s championship, which is set to take place at Lancaster (Pa.) Country Club on July 9-12.

The third-ranked amateur in the world already has five wins on the season, including a week earlier when she won the Women’s Porter Cup with a final round 62. The 2016 high school graduate has given a verbal commitment to Florida, but still believes she has work to do to get where she wants to be with her game.

“The best players in the world are here and to know that I’m right up there, it’s really awesome. I still have a long way to go to where I want to be in the next couple years, but it’s really exciting to know that I have the potential.

“It was a great finish here this week.”
