Sun Devils pull even with USC

Arizona State fired a 1-over 289 to pull into a tie with USC for the top spot at 2 over at the NCAA Women's West Regional at Tumble Creek Club in Cle Elum, Wash.

The Sun Devils, ranked seventh by Golfweek, were five shots better than the top-ranked Trojans in the second round as USC faltered down the stretch, its five players combining to shoot 13 over in the final five holes.

Arizona State's second-round total was the best of the day, too, even with junior Noemi Jimenez shooting 2-over 74 and falling into a tie for third place at 3 under, one shot behind co-leaders, USC's Kyung Kim and Washington's SooBin Kim, who shot 70 Friday.

Senior Laura Blanco shot 3-under 69, freshman Monica Vaughn carded a 72 and Justine Lee chipped in with a 74 to round of the Sun Devils' second-round total.

USC's Annie Park shot under par Friday, carding a 1-under 71 despite being 5 under through 13 holes.

The Sun Devils have made an NCAA-record 22 straight appearances in the NCAA Championship while USC is attempting to win back-to-back NCAA titles.

Heading North

Northwestern entered Friday in a tie for 10th place. But after an 8-over 296, the Wildcats are now solo fifth at 22 over.

Elizabeth Szokol bounced back from a first-round 79 to shoot 72 in the second round while Suchaya Tangkamolprasert shot 73 to move into a tie for sixth overall.

Last year, Northwestern used a final-round charge to secure its second NCAA Championship berth in school history.

Short shots

Only five teams shot 8 over or better Friday, and all five of them are in the top 5, including third-place Washington and fourth-place Oklahoma, which are now 5 over and 10 over, respectively, for the tournament. . . . Cal State-Northridge's Clariss Guce remains the highest ranking individual competitor. She is tied for eighth at 1 over after a second-round 77. . . . Clemson's Ashlan Ramsey, who will turn pro after the Curtis Cup in June and is currently 24th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, also shot 77 and is now tied for 62nd at 11 over.
