2001: Oil-free sunscreen with a theme

Golfers from the North heading to the sunshine for a few precious winter rounds should remember that their skin hasn’t been exposed to the rays for a few chilly months.

Sunscreen always is an important accessory in your golf bag, but it becomes even more vital when playing in the sun for the first time in a while. Two new sun-protection products themed specifically for golfers offer the necessary protection without slippery side-effects.

The first, “Jack Nicklaus vs. The Sun,” is an effective product with name recognition, even though literal application of the product’s name might raise a few eyebrows. Yes, the Golden Bear is a powerful presence on the golf course, but if he’s going one-on-one with the sun, we’re betting on the sun.

The application of the product, however, will serve its protective purpose without leaving oily residue – a huge selling point for golfers. Made by Randall International, a leading manufacturer of luxury skin care products, Nicklaus vs. the Sun offers protection in SPF levels of 8, 15 and 30-plus.

“It’s been said that I have walked over 10,000 miles in tournament play, and living in Florida, there is not a day that goes by where I don’t apply sun protection,” Nicklaus said. “But, there have been performance issues (concerning) oily residue. We have developed a product to eliminate that problem.”

Nicklaus vs. The Sun is available in golf shops and resorts. For product information, call 800-772-8755, Ext. 253, or visit http://www.nicklaus.com.

SportSticks, an Albany, N.Y. company, offers another new way to protect skin from the sun without affecting your golf grip. The Golfbag sunscreen, with 30 SPF, UVA and UVB protection, features a hands-free applicator in the shape of a golf bag. It makes for a practical product, and also a golf-specific theme.

“Skin cancer is preventable if you take the necessary precautions,” said Jay Vandervort, who, along with Dana Welch, founded SportSticks.

The Golfbag also offers a product that is combination insect repellent/sunscreen with the same hands-free applicator.
