’09 Southern Am awarded to Colonial

The 2009 Southern Amateur will be played at Colonial Country Club’s South Course in Cordova, Tenn., on July 15-18.

Once restricted to golfers from the 14 traditional southern states, the Southern Am now attracts amateurs from throughout the country and world.

Colonial was the site of the PGA Tour’s Danny Thomas-St. Jude Classic from its inception through 1988, when the event moved to TPC Southwind. Al Geiberger shot his PGA Tour-record 59 in the 1977 tournament at Colonial.

A year earlier, in 1976, Colonial also hosted the Southern Am, which was won by Chip Beck.

The 2008 Southern Amateur will be played July 16-19 at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in Orlando, Fla.
