• See below for Golfweek’s Buick Open rankings.

Rex Hoggard
Hoggard’s best bet: Kenny Perry.

In a world without Tiger Woods, consider “KP” a perennial favorite. Particularly at a venue the cool Kentuckian has owned. Perry is one of the hottest players on the PGA Tour, having posted top-25 finishes in five of his last six starts; rested, having skipped the U.S. Open in his pursuit of Ryder Cup points; and comfortable at Warwick Hills, where he has won (2001) and finished outside the top 30 just twice in a dozen starts.

Ace up Hoggard’s sleeve: Daniel Chopra.

Although he seems to have lost the intangible that propelled him to his second Tour title earlier this year at Kapalua, Warwick Hills may hold the secret to Chopra’s rebound. Check the stats from the 2007 edition. Last year’s champion Brian Bateman hit barely half his fairways (31 of 56), tied for 35th in greens in regulation and was 26th in driving distance. He did rank eighth in putting, the most important asset at the Buick Open. Chopra ranks third on Tour with a 1.733 average.

Eric Soderstrom

Soderstrom’s best bet: Justin Leonard.

It’s tough not to go with Jim Furyk here, considering he has playedeach of his last 37 rounds at the Buick Open under par. But I feelbetter throwing my coinage on Leonard’s momentum, especially at a placethat he has also enjoyed over the years. Leonard won this event in 1996and finished tied for second last year, a shot behind champion BrianBateman. The Buick Open is also typically a birdiefest, which playsright into Leonard’s hands. (He’s currently 9th in both Total Birdiesand Birdie Average.) If not this week, look for him to soon become theonly other multiple winner on Tour this year besides Tiger and Phil.

Ace up Soderstron’s sleeve: Heath Slocum.

Don’t let Slocum’s missed cut at the Buick last year throw youoff here. He is actually on a better roll than Leonard. Leonard mighthave the recent victory, but Slocum has three top-10s over his pastfive starts and hasn’t finished worse than 26th over that same span. That includes a tie for ninth at the U.S. Open, where he closed with a6-under 65, and a fourth-place finish last week in Connecticut.

I also like Tiger Woods here, you know, if he decides to play on two hands.

Sean Martin

Martin’s best bet: Kenny Perry.

Missing the U.S. Open didn’t slow the momentum on the Kenny PerryExpress. He picked up where he left off, finishing T-6 at last week’sTravelers. Perry likes Warwick Hills, too. He won the 2001 Buick Openand finished T-10 in 2007 and T-11 in 2006. Also keep an eye on JustinLeonard.

Ace up Martin’s sleeve: Heath Slocum.

Slocum has shot five consecutive rounds of 67 or lower. He closed theU.S. Open with a tournament-low 65, then finished T-4 at the Travelers.Slocum has finished T-26 or better in six of his past seven starts, andhas four top-10s in that stretch.

His record at Warwick Hills isn’t the best, but who cares with stats like that?
