Fantasy Aces: Travelers Championship

Welcome to’s Fantasy Aces, your weekly source for winning fantasy golf leagues. Such information is less likely to help you come out of post-U.S. Open depression, but that’s hopefully not the reason you’re here.

The Fantasy Aces appear every Wednesday on

This week’s event: Travelers Championship
Course: TPC River Highlands (6,820 yards, par 70), Cromwell, Conn.
Purse: $6 million. Winner’s share: $1.08 million.
Last year: Hunter Mahan birdied the final hole of regulation to force a playoff with Jay Williamson, then won with a 2-footer for birdie on the first extra hole.

Eric Soderstrom

Soderstrom’s best bet: Vijay Singh.

First, for those of you who had been saving Tiger Woods in your one-and-done leagues… My condolences.

Second, let me apologize to everyone for picking Phil Mickelson over Woods last week at the U.S. Open.

Two thoughts come to mind here:
1. I know.
2. I don’t know.

To be fair, I admitted my fault in betting against Tiger Woods up front. But I still felt pretty good taking the chance. I just didn’t think he was as healthy as he was telling everyone.

“Not sure how you see it,” I said, “but I don’t believe Woods when he answers those 20-word questions about his left knee so abruptly with the words ‘I’m fine.’ ”

At least I had that right. Just so happens Woods was also playing with a stress fracture in his left tibia, not just a torn ACL in his left knee.

My problem was that I thought cracked bones and torn cartilage and tornados and Tyrannosaurus Rexes would affect him.

Apparently, they don’t.

(How this has anything to do with picking Vijay Singh this week, I don’t really know. But he finished fourth at Travelers last year, and it only makes sense that a Singh or Mickelson would win the week after Tiger bows out early. Right?)

Ace up Soderstron’s sleeve: Carl Pettersson.

Go with a guy who played well at the Open. Hunter Mahan finished T-13 last year at Oakmont, then went on to win the Travelers. Pettersson finished T-6 last week, and bounced back from a third-round 77 with a closing 68.

Lance Ringler

Ringler’s best bet: Kenny Perry.

Far and away, the favorite this week is Kenny Perry. Perry took last week off – actually, he wasn’t exempt into the field, which is beyond me considering he is one of the hottest players in the world. And he will be one of only two top 10 players in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index in the field. Perry has finished in the top two in his lastfour starts and has made the cut in his last 15 events, which is fourth-best on the PGA Tour. This will be Perry’s 10th trip to the TPC at River Highlands, where he has four top 10s.

Ace up Ringler’s sleeve: John Mallinger.

There are numerous players that would qualify as a sleeper this week, but how about John Mallinger? After making the cut last week at Torrey Pines, Mallinger has climbed to No. 40 in the Performance Index and has three top 10s on the PGA Tour this year. Don’t be surprised if he makes it four this week.

Rex Hoggard
Note: Like Tiger Woods, Hoggard is on vacation.
