Jane Park holed out for eagle from 128 yards with a 9-iron on her first hole of the day, No. 10 at LPGA International’s Legends Course.

She ended up shooting 65 to take a two-shot lead after the first round.

Park (pictured), the 2004 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion, had non-exempt status in 2007, her rookie season on the LPGA. Her best finish in 11 events was a T-17 at the Sybase Classic.

Comeback Kuehne: Kelli Kuehne shot 5-under 67 at the Champions Course to sit in second. The two-time Women’s Amateur champ was non-exempt this year, missing 11 cuts in 19 starts. It’s been eight years since Kuehne won her only LPGA title.

Down and out: Beth Bauer, the 2002 LPGA Rookie of the Year, opened with a 76. Bauer is coming off a year on the Futures Tour where she won only $3,450.

English hotshot Kiran Matharu and her father didn’t look too happy in the snack bar. A later glance at the leaderboard explained why: 11-over 83, tied for last with Diane Irvin. Matharu played in the 2006 Curtis Cup as a 17-year-old.

The price of lunch probably didn’t make the Matharus any happier. The snack bar menu has been covered up and replaced with a “Q-School Menu.” You can be sure they aren’t cutting these women a break. A soda costs $3, PB&J with chips and a drink: $8. Price gouging LPGA players at a course named LPGA International? Go figure.

Back on the map: Sukjin Lee Wuesthoff, the 2003 U.S. Girls’ Junior champ, has been MIA the past couple years. She’s in good shape after a 3-under 69 that put her in a tie for fourth with Meredith Duncan, the 2001 U.S. Women’s Amateur champ.

Traffic jam: Ten players are tied for 10th at 2 under par, including former Duke standouts Liz Janangelo, Kristina Tucker and Anna Grzebien. Also in that group are South African phenom Ashleigh Simon and Yani Tseng, who beat Michelle Wie in the final of the 2004 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links.

What you need to know: There’s a 72-hole cut to the top 70 and ties. The top 17 players receive their cards for 2008 while the next 35 and ties earn non-exempt status.

Quote of the day: “The range closes at 4 p.m.” – Dave, the range attendant.
