Martin makes history in Europe

GOLFWEEK STAFF

Oklahoma State junior Pablo Martin shot 3-under 68 April 1 to win the Estoril Open de Portugal and become the first amateur to win on the European Tour.

Martin, No. 20 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, finished at 7-under 277, one shot ahead of Raphael Jacquelin. Jacquelin received the winner’s check because Martin is an amateur.

Martin will return to Oklahoma State, then is expected to turn pro after the NCAA Division I Men’s Championship.

“I’ve already thought about it,” he said. “I’ve got to play with Oklahoma State. They’ve been giving me so many things and (turning pro) does not enter my mind right now.”

Third-round leader Alexander Noren, who also played for Oklahoma State, shot 76 to finish tied for 11th at 1 under par.

Martin and Noren, who were both in Sunday’s final pairing, were teammates during Martin’s freshman year in Stillwater. Ross McGowan, who played collegiately at Tennessee, rounded out the pairing.

“I think playing with Alex … as well as Ross, … who is a really good friend, made it like playing in college,” Martin said.

Martin’s victory earns him a European Tour exemption until the end of 2009. If he doesn’t turn pro within the next two weeks, he will only be able to accept five more sponsor exemptions in Europe this year.

This was Martin’s second consecutive European Tour start as he took a hiatus from the Cowboys. Martin missed the cut at last week’s Madeira Island Open, and opened with a 73 this week, but shot 8 under par over the weekend. He two-putted for par from 25 feet on No. 18 Sunday.

Martin also finished T-63 at the PGA Tour’s Mayakoba Golf Classic earlier this year.

Martin started the day in third place after shooting 66, including a back-nine 29, on Saturday. This was not his first time being in contention in a European Tour event.

As a 17-year-old, Martin was in a six-way tie for the lead after the third round of the 2003 Canarias Open de Espana, but closed with 74 to finish T-22.

Martin is the second Oklahoma State amateur to win a pro event. Scott Verplank won the 1985 Western Open while still a Cowboy.

“It is nice to see him play well and enjoy himself on the golf course,” Oklahoma State head coach Mike McGraw said. “We are very proud of him and his victory means a lot to our program.”

Information from the Associated Press, Oklahoma State and the European Tour was used in this report.
