No. 1 UCLA wins Regional Challenge

Top-ranked UCLA surged past rival USC to win the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge Feb. 13 at Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.

UCLA’s final-round 289 was the low round of the day. The Bruins finished at 24-over 876, seven shots ahead of No. 6 Florida (294) and 11 ahead of fourth-ranked USC (301). The Trojans started the final round with a one-shot lead over the Bruins and three-shot advantage over the Gators.

Wake Forest freshman Natalie Sheary, No. 41 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, shot a final-round 72 to win the individual title by one shot with a 2-over 215 total. Wake Forest’s Nannette Hill closed the fall season with a victory at the Landfall Tradition, giving the Demon Deacons medalists in back-to-back events for the first time in program history.

Five players – Pepperdine’s Taylore Karle, Arizona State’s Azahara Munoz, Florida’s Whitney Meyers and Jessica Yadloczky and UCLA’s Glory Yang – finished T-2 at 3 over par.
