Spartans, Brehm win despite cold

GOLFWEEK STAFF

Michigan State, led by junior Ryan Brehm, won the frigid Boilermaker Invitational Sunday. The Spartans carded a tournament-low 4-over 292 to win their first event of the season by nine shots over host Purdue and Northwestern. The Boilermakers and Wildcats finished at 602 while Auburn placed fourth at 607.

"I felt like we were extremely well prepared for this tournament," Spartan coach Mark Hankins said. "The guys worked through the off-season so they could come out in the spring and compete to win tournaments. We were just a little better than the rest of the teams this particular weekend."

Weather affected the event from the start. Thirty-six holes were scheduled to be played the first day followed by 18 holes on the final day. However, cold temperatures turned the event into a 36-hole contest. When play started on Saturday, it was 28 degrees, with a wind chill hovering in the teens.

"We battled the weather as well as anyone in the field and came out on top," Hankins said.

Final results with relation to par from the Boilermaker Invitational, played April 8 on the par-72, 7,338-yard Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind.:
