Whitsett, Johnson win Rolex ToC

GOLFWEEK STAFF

Cory Whitsett left no doubt Friday that he is the player to beat in junior golf.

On the heels of a four-shot victory June 20 at the Western Junior, the 16-year-old dominated the Rolex Tournament of Champions on the Fourth of July, closing with an even-par 72 at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Ind., to finish at 2-under 286 complete a five-shot victory.

Whitsett, No. 1 in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings, will defend his title at the U.S. Junior Amateur at Shoal Creek in Birmingham, Ala. in two weeks.

Whitsett lead wire-to-wire at Rolex, making just six bogeys in 72 holes and finishing as the only player under par to claim his first AJGA invitational title.

“It was a very long week, especially in the mental capacity,” Whitsett said. “You could never really take a shot off. I really grinded in the first round which set me up well for the rest of the week.”

He tied for fourth at last month’s FootJoy Invitational and tied for 14th at the Thunderbird International Junior in May.

Jeffrey Kang, who had never finished better than 20th at an AJGA invitational, also carded 72 in the final round and finished second at 291. Andrew Yun (70) and Troy Anderson (74) tied for third, another shot back.

In the girls’ division, Jennifer Johnson closed with a 3-over 75 to finish at 293 and top Doris Chen (72) and Tiffany Lua (71) by two shots. Lua made the cut at last week’s U.S. Women’s Open.

Johnson, a 16-year-old senior-to-be at Desert Christian High School in Palm Desert, Calif., moved into the lead after a second-round 74 and increased her lead to two shots in the third round with a 72.

On Friday, Johnson played the front nine in 4 over, but rallied on the back making eight consecutive pars before hitting her approach shot to 3 feet for birdie on No. 18.

“I looked at the leaderboard on No. 16 and knew I had the lead,” Johnson said. “I just tried to play the final hole smart and the ball rolled out pretty nicely for me.”

The victory is Johnson’s first invitational title. She tied for fifth at the Thunderbird International Junior in May and tied for third at the Ping Invitational last October. In her AJGA career, Johnson now has seven titles, including three last year. She finished T-15 at the Rolex Tournament of Champions last year. She will play for Arizona State in the fall of 2009.

Allie White shot 69, the day’s best round, and moved from 30th to 13th.

Final scores with relation to par from the Rolex Tournament of Champions, played July 1-4 at the par-72, 7,169-yard Victoria National Golf Club (6,375 yards for girls) in Newburgh, Ind.:
