When the week began, it was a Davies who drew attention, but when all was said and done at the ANZ Championship, it was a Davis who stole the show.
Laura Davies, the first woman to compete on the PGA European Tour, missed the cut and finished 154th. Brian Davis, however, was definitely around at the end, storming back from 12 points down to win the modified Stableford scoring event.
Davis birdied 10 holes Feb. 15, racking up 17 points and finishing with 44 points at Horizons Golf Resort. The total earned him a 1-point victory over countryman Paul Casey in the tournament co-sanctioned by the Australasian and European tours.
“I had three bogeys, but my main goal today was just to go out there and make as many birdies as I can and see where I finish,” Davis said.
It was Davis’ second victory, coming nearly four years after his triumph in the 2000 Spanish Open. He moved into fourth place in the European Ryder Cup standings and third on the Order of Merit behind Ernie Els and Miguel Angel Jimenez.
Under the scoring system, players received 8 points for double eagle, 5 for eagle, 2 for birdie, zero for par, minus-1 for bogey and minus-3 for double bogey or higher.
Casey, the 2002 winner at New South Wales Golf Club, had seven birdies in a bogey-free, 14-point final round.
France’s Thomas Levet and Australians Scott Gardiner and Nick Flanagan, the U.S. Amateur champion, tied for third at 39.
England’s Steve Webster, the third-round leader, had minus-2 points in the final round to fall into a tie for sixth with 37 points. Webster was in third place and trailed by 4 points going into the par-4 18th hole, where an eagle would have given him 5 points and the victory. His first attempt to drive the green on the 330-yard hole went out of bounds and his second went into the water. After failing to hole a chip shot for 5, he picked up and lost 3 points, dropping three spots.
On Friday, Davies missed the cut with a two-day total of minus-13 points – 40 points behind the second-round leader.
