Mike Griffin is resigning after 25 years as men’s golf coach at Auburn but will remain as director of golf, the university announced May 4.
“When I was brought here,’’ Griffin said, “my purpose was to get a golf course, practice facility and team home built, and those have been completed.’’
Griffin (pictured, with former SEC champion Patton Kizzire), a four-time SEC coach of the year, was inducted into the Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2000. He coached Troy State, his alma mater, from 1973 to ’84.
The Tigers finished the season No. 62 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings but did not earn an at-large bid to NCAA regionals. The Tigers ended the year with a 54-79-1 overall head-to-head mark, falling well short of the .500 won-loss record required.
It was the first time Auburn did not make the posteason since the 1998-99 season.
