M.J. Maguire, of St. Petersburg, Fla., shot 5-under 65 Tuesday to take the first-round lead in the AJGA’s FootJoy Boys Invitational.
Mario Clemens, Rak Cho, Jordan Spieth and Ian McConnell are in second after shooting 66 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. Spieth is No. 1 in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings.
Sedgefield is the host course for the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship; the winner of this tournament will earn an exemption into the Wyndham field.
Maguire’s bogey on the first hole was his only one of the day. He made birdies on four of his next six holes, then added two more on the back nine, including on the final hole.
Maguire, a rising high school junior, has never won an AJGA event. In two starts this year he tied for second at the AJGA Cliffs Championship and finished fourth at the Mizuno Junior at Innisbrook.
He is No. 137 in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings, and No. 23 in the Class of 2011.
Patrick Winther, who won consecutive AJGA invitationals at the Polo Golf Junior last November and the HP Boys Championship earlier this year, continued to struggle. Winther finished last at the Thunderbird Invitational in May and is in last place here after a 12-over 82. His round included a quadruple-bogey at No. 11 and a double bogey at the final hole.
