FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Amateur Nick Taylor ended a long Thursday in style – holing a bunker shot for birdie at the par-3 14th just before the horn blew to stop play Friday night.
Taylor’s birdie put him at 5 under for the day. He’s 2 under for the tournament and tied for sixth. He’ll return at 7:30 Saturday morning to play the final four holes of his second round (Note: Taylor will do a live chat on Golfweek.com after he completes the round).
Taylor looked at the leaderboard often Friday, but not to see his name.
“In the morning, most of the time I was looking at Mike Weir to see how he was playing,” Taylor said. “It was good to see he was playing well.”
It’s a good week for Taylor, who missed the cut in the ‘08 Open. He moved to No. 1 in the R&A’s World Amateur Rankings earlier this week; he’s No. 8 in the Golfweek/amateurgolf.com World Amateur Rankings.
Taylor, a rising senior at the University of Washington, was honest when asked by a reporter if he was surprised by his position. “Ya,” he replied.
But Taylor has plays well on tough courses, finishing second and T-9 in the past two NCAA Championships.
Taylor was paired with Gary Woodland, who also made a move Friday afternoon. Woodland matched Taylor’s first-round 73, and is 4 under for the second round.
“We both made a lot of putts in the afternoon,” Taylor said.
