FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Most golf fans are familiar with U.S. Open first-round leader Mike Weir, but do New York golf fans know Swede Peter Hanson, the golfer most visible in Weir’s rear-view mirror after shooting 66?
“Most fans mix me up with Soren,” Hanson said of Dane Soren Hansen (in a tongue-in-cheek pairing by the USGA, Hanson and Hansen played together today).
Here’s what you need to know about Hanson: he made a hole-in-one on the second playoff hole at Walton Heath’s Old Course to grab the final spot in a European qualifier for the U.S. Open.
“It felt like fate,” he said of punching his ticket with his sixth career hole-in-one, a 6-iron from 206-yards.
If Hanson keeps playing like he did in the opening round he will make a reputation all his own.
