FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Nathan Tyler’s holed bunker shot was too little, too late. Tyler, a former University of Arizona standout, came to the 18th hole needing par to make the cut. His hole-out was for bogey, though.
Tyler hit his approach into the knee-high grass surrounding the left greenside bunker. His first swing didn’t advance the ball. He quickly took a one-handed swing to knock the ball backward into the bunker, then didn’t waste much time addressing his bunker shot, probably certain that he’d already missed out on the final 36 holes.
Exactly 60 players will make the cut at 4-over 144. That will help as the USGA tries to squeeze in 36 holes by the end of Sunday.
