Top-seeded Stephanie Kono is still alive after the first round of match play in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links. In one of the more commanding matches of the day, Kono took down Emily Powers, 4 and 3.
Annie Park, 14, took the second seed after firing 5-under 139 in the stroke play portion, but lost her match to UNLV’s Kristen Schelling, 3 and 2.
USC’s Jennifer Song, who was named the National Golf Coach’s Association Freshman of the Year and Golfweek’s Player of the Year, advanced to the Round of 32 over Junthima Gulyanamitta, 2 and 1. Lizette Salas, a rising junior and All-American at USC, also won her match, 2 and 1. Song lost in the final match of last year’s tournament.
Among the junior players present at the tournament, Yueer Cindy Feng, the AJGA Thunderbird Invitational champion, defeated Becca Huffer, 3 and 1. Last week’s Rolex Girls Junior Championship winner, Kimberly Kim, beat out Mallory Fraiche, 3 and 1, while Madison Pressel, who will play for Texas in the fall, fell to Sydnee Michaels, 3 and 2.
