Jennifer Song (pictured) cruised into the Round of 16 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Thursday, never trailing in victories over Alexandra Stewart and Brittany Altomare.
Song, Golfweek’s College Player of the Year as a freshman at USC this spring and WAPL runner-up last summer, made par on Nos. 16-18 at Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Mass., to win 1-up over Altomare, the 2006 Junior PGA champ. She defeated Stewart in the morning, 5 and 4.
Stroke-play medalist Stephanie Kono wasn’t as lucky. Two up through 13 holes to Jisoo Park of Korea, Kono lost three holes in a row and Park closed out the UCLA freshman, 1 up.
In the afternoon’s wildest match, Auburn All-American Cydney Clanton topped USC All-American Lizette Salas, 1 up. The pair each held the lead at one point on the front nine. Clanton squared the match with a birdie at No. 13, then took a 1-up lead with a birdie at No. 14. She won No. 15 with a par to go 2 up, then double bogeyed No. 16 to lose the hole. Clanton held on with pars the rest of the way.
Kimberly Kim, the 2006 U.S. Women’s Amateur champ, also advanced with a 2-and-1 victory of Sara-Maude Juneau. Kim will attend Denver in the fall. Juneau completed her sophomore season at Louisville in the spring.
UCLA rising senior Sydnee Michaels moved into the Round of 16, too, with a birdie on No. 18 to top Virginia rising senior Whitney Neuhauser, 1 up.
