Thompson, Vogel take Jr. PGA titles

MAINEVILLE, Ohio – Alexis Thompson pulled away to win the girls’ division at the Junior PGA Championship on Friday, and T.J. Vogel took the boys’ title on the TPC River’s Bend course.

The 14-year-old Thompson also won the title in 2007. She led after every round this week, and took a 12-stroke win on Friday, one shy of the tournament record. Her 5-under-par final round left her only one stroke behind Debbie Hall for biggest winning margin – a 13-stroke victory in 1977.

“I never gave up, and I didn’t take anything for granted,” said Thompson, of Coral Springs, Fla. “I just wanted to make more and more birdies.”

Sarah Brown of Phillipsburg, N.J., played with Thompson in the final group and finished second for the second straight year.

Vogel, of Cooper City, Fla., shot a 66 in the final round to beat Jordan Spieth of Dallas by two strokes. He had four consecutive birdies from the eighth to the 11th holes, putting him in control. Vogel will head to Southern California in the fall.

“I wanted to win my last tournament before going to college, and I accomplished that goal,” Vogel said. “I could not picture this any other way, leaving junior golf.”
