TULSA, Okla. – Every player whether, already on the U.S. Walker Cup team or trying to make the squad, has a different reasons why they want to play for their country.
For Bronson Burgoon, it is a childhood memory. Literally.
When Burgoon was 13 years old he said he remembers seeing a picture with a bunch of golfers surrounding a trophy and holding an American flag. He recalls asking his dad who the guys in the picture were and his father replied, “That’s Team USA at the Walker Cup.”
“Ever since I saw that picture of all the guys smiling,” Burgoon said. “I knew I wanted to be a part of that experience and try to help my country win.”
Burgoon is one of several different players in the field at the U.S. Amateur hoping to catch the eye of captain Buddy Marucci and the USGA committee for one of the last two remaining spots. A run at winning the Havemeyer Trophy would do probably do that.
