Hutsby and the dog license

ARDMORE, Pa. – Rickie Fowler won’t know it, but he handed England’s Sam Hutsby a dog license in singles play.

Fowler will see it only as a 7-and-6 victory, but back in the United Kingdom we call this margin of victory a dog license.

Back in the days when British currency consisted of pounds, shillings and pence, it cost British dog owners seven shillings and sixpence for a dog license. Hence, the term for a 7-and-6 win.
