Michelle Wie narrowly missed playing in this week’s Samsung World Championship. She would have been the next player in the field, if the field included more than just 20 players.
This is something that needs further review. Torrey Pines is certainly big enough for a few more contestants.
Wie, who is No. 16 on the money list, trailed Lindsey Wright, the last player to get into the field via the money list, by $83,765 prior to the start of this week’s event.
(The Samsung field also includes the winners of the season’s four LPGA majors, the previous year’s Vare Trophy winner, the LPGA Tour’s current money list leader and the tournament’s defending champion.)
The tournament and the LPGA needed Wie in the field. Certainly there would have been more people showing up at the gate and more people would have tuned into the telecast had she been playing.
Sure, she fell short in total dollars won in 2009 and did not qualify by winning a major, but against this field she has a better head-to-head won-loss record in common starts than eight players playing at Torrey Pines.
You can’t tell me everyone would not be better off with her the field … can you?
