Rickie Fowler shot a tournament-best 6-under 65 Friday at the Nationwide Tour’s Soboda Classic and will enter the weekend in a tie for second, one shot back of leader Jerod Turner.
Fowler’s opening-round 70 included two birdies and one bogey. He also made just one bogey Friday but added seven birdies, including two on his final two holes. He started the round tied for 28th.
Fowler, who lost in a playoff at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational this summer as an amateur, missed the cut in his professional debut last week at the Albertsons Boise Open with rounds of 73-71, just days after leading the U.S. Walker Cup team to victory at Merion.
Titleist announced last week that it had reached a multiyear equipment deal with Fowler. This week, Puma announced that it had signed Fowler to an apparel and footwear deal, surprising him with a motocross-inspired golf cart as a welcome gift.
