SAN FRANCISCO – The U.S. leads the Presidents Cup, 12 1/2 to 9 1/2, entering the 12 Sunday singles matches. That means it’s not over, not quite.
But it almost was.
Had Phil Mickelson gotten up and down from a bad lie beside the 18th green in the final Saturday match, it would have been over for all intents and purposes. Mickelson, who has gone undefeated and played brilliantly, kept the Internationals on the respirator with his failed conversiion.
Had the U.S. led by four points, the Internationals would’ve needed a 9-3 Sunday. As it is, they need to go 8-4. Not easy, but doable.
