UC Davis takes Pacific Invite by one shot

UC Davis closed its fall season by holding off BYU to win the Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational by one shot Wednesday at Brookside Country Club in Stockton, Calif.

After opening with consecutive rounds of 11-under 273, the Aggies closed in 2 over 286 to finish at 20-under 832. BYU shot a final-round 275, the best round of the day by five shots, but came up just short at 19-under 833. Oregon finished third, just another shot back.

“This win shows what we can do,” said coach Cy Williams, who team last year finished the season 35th in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. “It was a very strong field and will help our ranking. From a confidence standpoint, it shows our young team what they’re capable of doing. It was one of the most exciting wins we’ve ever had.”

After tying the school record with an 8-under 63 in Round 3, UC Davis sophomore Tyler Raber, of El Macero, Calif., cruised to his first individual title with a final-round 72. Raber, coming off a T-11 at The Prestige at PGA West, finished at 14-under 199, four shots better than Oregon’s Eugene Wong (73).

“Tyler’s had a very good fall and he knows the course well,” said Williams. “He had a really good game plan. When you have a good game plan it just takes that doubt out of your game. His scores are pretty amazing but not surprising since he’s done it in practice. We’re very proud of him.”

His previous best finish was a T-8 at the Spartan Classic in September.
