Peter Uihlein cemented his place as the player to beat in 2009-10.

The Oklahoma State sophomore won his second title of the fall Wednesday at the Gifford Collegiate at CordeValle. Uihlein, No. 1 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, posted 14-under 202 at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, Calif., to beat Stanford junior Sihwan Kim (207) by five shots.

Uihlein made four back-nine birdies in a closing 3-under 69. In the second round, he made nine birdies en route to a 65. His opening 68 was highlighted by an eagle on the 547-yard par-5 18th.

“I’m just sticking to my strengths,” said Uihlein, who has been driving the ball a lot better since his freshman year. He also credited his short game and improved wedge play to his recent success.

The top-ranked Cowboys, however, could not keep pace with Stanford. The Cardinal, No. 2 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, finished at 24-under 1,056 to win the team title by three shots over OSU. Stanford’s closing 8-under 352 was underscored by a 67 from sophomore David Chung, who tied for third at 8-under 208 with Oklahoma State’s Morgan Hoffmann (69), Charlotte’s Corey Nagy (71) and UCLA freshman Pontus Widegren (67).

The event used a play-6-count-5 format.

No. 11 Augusta State (1,061) finished third and No. 17 UCLA (1,067) was fourth.

Uihlein has been peaking since the summer. The two-time American Junior Golf Association Player of the Year posted a 4-0 record in leading Team USA to a victory at the Walker Cup in August. He opened the college season Sept. 20 with a T-14 at the Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields, then won the Ping/Golfweek Invitational a week later at Gold Mountain in Bremerton, Wash. Prior to arriving at CordeValle, Uihlein tied for third at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Fla.

“Confidence is a funny thing,” Uilhein said. “I’ve just been going off of it since (the Walker Cup). Hopefully I’ll continue to play well so I can help the team play well.”

The Cowboys, who won the Ping/Golfweek Invitational and Isleworth Collegiate, open their spring season Feb. 21 at the Puerto Rico Classic.

“We all know we have 81 days left until our first spring event,” Uihlein said.

Stanford has placed in the top 4 in each of its four fall events. The Cardinal finished runner-up Oct. 13 at The Prestige at PGA West and was third at Isleworth.
