After watching Geoff Ogilvy win the SBS Championship last weekend at Kapalua, I wanted to take a closer look at his new gear.
Since his deal with Puma Golf expired at the end of the year, Ogilvy is a free agent on the clothing-sponsor front. His new deal with FootJoy calls for him to wear the company’s shoes and gloves, but he is not obligated to wear FootJoy clothes nor is he signed to wear Titleist or FootJoy logos on anything other than his hats.
So the question remains: Which lucky company is going to lock down this fashionable champion as their next ambassador?
At Kapalua, Ogilvy was sporting one of the trendiest clothing lines on the market – Travis Mathew. He joined a list of some stylish players that sport this line, including John Mallinger, Jason Gore, Tommy Armour III, Billy Horschel and Peter Tomasulo. The T.M. Web site currently says it has a “New TM Player – to be announced.”
Could it be Ogilvy?
“We are currently working with Geoff,” Travis Mathew founder Travis Johnson told me in an e-mail Tuesday. “No official deal yet, but he really likes our gear.”
Ogilvy looked great in T.M. last week. He wore a variety of polos from the line – Round 1 he sported the the I-Recline white, two-pocket polo; Round 2 he wore the Scotch light blue with white piping polo; Round 3 was the I-Viewpoint white striped polo; and for the final round Ogilvy wore the IQ black polo. There were very subtle logos placed on the back of his shirt directly under the collar. The T.M. polos are generally made from a blend of pima cotton and polyester and start at $79.95.
With rumors circling that he will sign on with Travis Mathew, I’ll be watching Ogilvy closely in the weeks to come. It will be interesting to see what he’s wearing next.
