Comparing rankings at the Match Play

The WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship is underway and it’s always fun for me to look at some of the players that found a way into the field based on their Official World Ranking and compare the Golfweek/Sagarin numbers to the OWR numbers.

Using the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, there are 13 differences in the 64-player field. There would have been just 11, but with Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson each electing not to play, two more players – Chris Wood (65) and Ross McGowan (66) – got into the field based on their Official World Ranking.

So, just how did those players ranked outside the top 66 in the Golfweek/Sagarin numbers do in the opening round? They went 6-7. You know what they say, anything can happen in match play.
